Great tool for easy recording your desktop
Screencast-O-Matic started its life in 2007 under the leadership of the of development team Big Nerd Software. Built from the ground up to provide its users the best streamlined process of capturing and sharing video, this service grew over the past few years with great pace, eventually reaching the stage in which both free and premium users can freely create new recordings and automatically post them on YouTube.
All that you need to start using Screencast-O-Matic’s recording service is the latest Java package, a cross-platform programming language that enables cross-platform use on Windows, Linux and Mac. For best usage, you need to have at least Java 1.5 or higher. After starting up the applet, recording overlay will appear on your desktop giving you the access to few options and modes of filming. You can record your entire desktop, or capture area of 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 or manually tweak recording size. After recording is finished (free members who don’t have registered account are limited to 15 minutes of length), you are presented with 3 export options – Publish to Screencast-O-Matic (where you can create your own library of videos that can be viewed by anyone), Publish to YouTube (with streamlined way of directly uploading video to your channel) and Publish to Video File. For this last option you can choose type of a video container (QuickTime MP4, Windows Media AVI, FLV and GIF), video size, you can add notes, captions, and you can customize video overlay by choosing to showcase or remove notes, mouse cursor, mouse clicks, mouse halo, audio or web cam feed.
All in all, Screencast-O-Matic offers everyone features that are easy to use, with lots of choice how to handle finished recording when you are ready to publish it. It’s important to say that if Java applet is not functioning properly, you can always download standalone recording application that is very lightweight and works identically like web version.
Interface of Screencast-O-Matic is extremely easy and intuitive, enabling both complete novices to very quickly record images of their desktop, record sound from their microphone or even embed the video from their webcam into the video.
When you arrive on Screencast-O-Matic’s website you will immediately notice big blue buttons with “Star Recording” notice. Clicking on that will lead you to the page where you Java applet compatibility will be tested and recording overlay will start. Overlay features customizable screen size (you can drag edges to your preferred size), microphone toggle, audio volume button, webcam toggle, fixed screen size selector, and buttons that control start/end of recording.
